Mermaids provides support to trans and gender diverse young people up until their 20th birthday, as well as supporting their parents and professionals involved in their education and care. Among other things, we deliver training, legal support, and run a helpline and web chat support service operating from 9am to 9pm, Monday to Friday.
The beating heart of our charity will always be our helpline services, giving parents, young people and professionals a place to turn when they need support. In 2016, the helpline began to grow; from one staff member and a very small handful of volunteers to an entire team of staff and volunteers of all backgrounds, it grows with confident steps every year.
When Susie Green called the helpline back in 1999, no one could predict the path that she’d help set the charity on when she later stepped in as CEO in 2016. In a few short years, Mermaids has formed a full training team to help facilitate local groups and deliver CPD accredited training to professionals, alongside a Legal Advocacy and Policy team, research, PR, fundraising and more. All of our staff have achieved incredible things from sending personal thank you’s to our supporters to reaching young trans people who have nowhere left to turn.
Whilst we have hopes to extend our helpline services to operate at weekends and open more local support groups, our ultimate goal is to keep going, keep supporting parents and young people with the final aim that we’ll one day live in a world where our services are no longer needed.
