Switzerland wins Eurovision
Switzerland has won this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
The song, The Code, which was a cross between hip hop, pop and opera, gained an impressive 591 points.
It was performed by 24-year-old rapper and singer Nemo, who has become the first non-binary artist to win the prestigious song festival.
In the song, Nemo comes to terms with their identity with lyrics such as “Somewhere between the O’s and ones/ That’s where I found my kingdom come.”
In their emotional acceptance speech they thanked Eurovision and said: “I hope this contest can live up to its promise and continue to stand for peace and dignity for every person in the world.”
After leaving the stage they added: “This was one of the most queer representations we’ve seen at Eurovision which was amazing, I want to shout out all the other queer artists this year.”
Nemo beat bookies’ favourite Baby Lasagna from Croatia who came second, and surprise third-placers Ukraine’s alyona alyona & Jerry Heil.
The UK’s entry, Dizzy by Olly Alexander, came in at 18th place.
